TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service announced that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This development coincides with a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this output is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently illogical or surreal.
Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content produced via AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” said a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
The platform shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service identified as AI-generated. In total, in excess of 100 m videos are uploaded to the platform every day, making AI content a limited portion of its overall inventory.
How to Adjust Settings
Viewers will be in a position to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they view by using the content preference option in the application and picking AI-made media. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter include current affairs, style, cosmetics, and dance.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its rules oblige users to identify “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or emergencies. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.
Additionally, the platform will from now on attach an “AI-made” tag to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This step is aimed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
The company is also establishing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and organizations to create learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit educational bodies dedicated to educating programming and robotics.
Content Safety Approach
TikTok has justified its content review process, during discussion over plans to lay off a large number of review team members in Britain. It is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content before it has to be seen by people. The platform stated a notable drop in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
